We Represent Good People in Bad Situations
Sumpter & Gonzalez is a team of lawyers and social workers who handle complex criminal and civil cases. While the heart of our work has always been defending people against criminal accusations, our advocacy has expanded over the years to include civil plaintiff’s work, victim representation, and business consulting.

We specialize in criminal law
We specialize in criminal law
While we handle all federal and state trial and appellate matters, our expertise is not limited to criminal defense. We represent survivors or sexual abuse in lawsuits against the institutions that failed them. We are hired in wrongful death cases and intoxication manslaughter collisions. We represent businesses and corporate witnesses who receive a federal grand jury subpoena. Sometimes we just spend several hours with a family trying to resolve a dispute before it results in prosecution or litigation. If you’re on either side of an allegation of criminal or professional misconduct, you’re (unfortunately) in our practice area.
You know our clients.
You know our clients.
Our job is to make sure you never know they’re our clients.
From public officials to prosecutors to partners at law firms, we serve a very selective client base. Sometimes it is a wrongful allegation. Sometimes the accusation is more accurate than we thought. Other times the act occurred, but the issue is complicated by mental health or substance abuse. What almost all of our clients have in common is they’ve never been in this situation before, and they require a legal team who has.
Why did a lawyer refer you to our Firm?
Why did a lawyer refer you to our Firm?
Our clients are sophisticated consumers of legal services. We are hired directly by lawyers when they have been arrested for state or federal charges. We are hired by lawyers to represent their sons and daughters. We are hired by lawyers to represent their civil clients. Because so much of our work is for other lawyers, we provide legal consulting and Second Legal Opinions for our colleagues and peers. We are hired to write motions and briefs; we are hired to draft objections; we are hired to find appellate issues and develop trial themes. Why did a lawyer refer you to our Firm? Because when a lawyer's reputation is on the line, lawyers hire Sumpter & Gonzalez.

We are proud of the professional awards we have received from the legal community. In 2018 the Austin Chapter of the Federal Bar Association awarded David Gonzalez the Practitioner of the Year. In 2017 the Austin Bar Association and the Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism recognized David as the lawyer “who best exemplifies, by conduct and character, truly professional traits, who others in the bar seek to emulate, and who all in the bar admire.” And back when we had less grey hair (and both had fewer children) David Gonzalez and Kristin Etter were awarded the Austin Bar Association/Austin Young Lawyer Association Most Outstanding Lawyer of the Year.

The right choice when something goes wrong
The right choice when something goes wrong
Our practice is focused on a specific area: allegations of wrongdoing. This is a broader focus than just arrests and criminal prosecution; almost half of our caseload involves intervention in disputes before there has been an arrest. Because there are two sides to every dispute, our work is not limited to defense. In addition to our public service as special prosecutors in high profile cases, we represent crime victims and witnesses in both the criminal and civil justice systems.
